Health, Safety and Welfare

In Knowsley Unison, everyone of our stewards is a Health and Safety representative, they have the right to statutory time off for training in relation to their role and can call on additional help from the branch and region if needed.
Statistically workplaces with active union health and safety rep's are safer and better places to work.

Branch Health and safety officer is: Karen Greer - please contact Karen via: admin@knowsley-unison.org.uk

What is Health, Safety and Welfare?

You probably have all seen something sensualistic in the news over health and safety banning this or banning that, ie: conker fights.

Don't be pulled in!!

In the majority of cases someone has made the decision for financial reasons or for reasons that have nothing to do with health and safety.

Across the country the public sector is facing massive cuts, Health and Safety is being hit with both barrels, first there was the Lord Young review which undermined Health and Safety in favor of businesses and profit, now in the government cuts the Health and Safety Executive has had it's funding slashed yet again.

What do cuts to HSE funding mean to you?

First, HSE has announced it is ceasing its infoline service, this was a phone service for employers, employees and the public to phone up for Health and Safety advice. Now you will only have their website for information.

Second, HSE will have to cut it's proactive inspections, this will result in many workplaces never being visited, until it's too late and someone is seriously injured or worse killed.

This means unless you have a strong union health and safety representative, employers will be more likely to cut corners to reduce short term costs . Putting your Health, Safety and Welfare on the line.
